Music Aloud Playback – Best Indian Songs of 2021!

2022 is nearly upon us. As is Omicron, unfortunately. At this point, one can only wait and hope that Covid tires itself out before we run out of Greek letters. To reiterate what I said last year, music has been of paramount importance in getting through these times. And here at Music Aloud, we hope to continue serving “mini meals” through our various channels for anyone who is as reliant on music as I am. 🙂

In 2020, although there was a drop in the number of movies, the quality of music more than made up for that drop, especially in the web series space. That hasn’t been the case this year however – in fact, the only web series whose music I found appealing was Amit Trivedi’s Grahan, which I therefore have had to incorporate into the Hindi movie songs list. On the flipside though, a lot of movies across industries had their OSTs out online this year, which allowed me to create a new list for instrumental theme pieces. The rest of my lists remain the same – Hindi, Malayalam, Tamil, Indie+pop and other language movies. As always, I have gone by the release date of the movie rather than the song – while I admit that it is getting increasingly tricky with the changing industry dynamics, I find this to be the best way to make sure I give every soundtrack, however non-descript, a fair chance, and end up unearthing great songs that I would almost certainly have missed otherwise.

For anyone checking out our lists for the first time, the entry format is the same as before: Song name (Movie Name) – Composer(s)|Lyricist(s)|Singer(s), and for Hindi, Malayalam and Tamil, it’s a top 25 followed by an honorary list of five. Like last year, the playlists have been put up on Apple, Spotify and YouTube this time as well – not all songs are available across all platforms, unfortunately.

Wishing everyone reading this post a safer and happier 2022! 🙂

And thanks as ever to @cookydoh for the artwork!

In my review of Justin Prabhakaran’s brilliant Meenakshi Sundareshwar, I had mentioned the irony of two of the best composing debuts in Bollywood in recent times happening in a year that has been a rather disappointing one for the industry. Barring the two debuts I mentioned – Justin, and Arijit with Pagglait – the good stuff largely came from A R Rahman (who appears to have switched gears over the lockdown period!). Interestingly, there was a bit of a spike in December, with Bob Biswas (Vishal Shekhar, Anupam Roy, Clinton Cerejo+Bianca Gomes), ’83 (Pritam, doing better here after a disappointing Tadap earlier in the year) and Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui (Sachin-Jigar, who had a busy year but didn’t deliver much of note, until this). And as usual, there were low-key projects that threw up some pleasant surprises – Oni-Adil in Hum Bhi Akele Tum Bhi Akele, Shabbir Ahmed in Bhavai (also a composing debut for the lyricist, I believe), Rajeev Bhalla and Mukund Suryawanshi (JAM8) in 14 Phere to name a few. Sagar Desai’s superb work in Ramprasad Ki Tehrvi also deserves a special mention – and as I do every time I hear a new soundtrack of his, I continue to wonder how the man doesn’t get more movies.

Compared to recent years, Malayalam music had a less fruitful 2021, with a lot of the standout tracks coming out in the final quarter, including Shaan Rahman and Sushin Shyam’s work for the current Malayalam sensation, Minnal Murali, which to me is the Malayalam soundtrack of the year. Both composers had a good run this year in general, Sushin in particular producing some good songs in Malik and Kurup. The composers who were the busiest this year were Neha Nair and Yakzan Gary Pereira, composing for as many as five movies (eventhough it was three or less songs in each of them). Another Justin who is fast growing in stature, Justin Varghese (two singles out from his next movie Super Sharanya are already looking like strong contenders for my next yearender!), also had a great year, although his best work of the year came in the background score for Joji (which I will obviously be featuring in the OST list). And it gives me a lot of joy to be able to finally feature songs from Prashant Pillai’s Saajan Bakery Since 1962 (which would have been my top soundtrack of the year had Minnal Murali not happened), and Ramesh Narayan’s Kolaambi whose release has been stalled for over two years now (I am still not sure if all the songs from the movie are out, I might have to cheat and include one next year if something compelling releases late).

Like Arijit Singh up North, Pradeep Kumar had a great year in Tamil, both as composer and singer. His soundtrack for Vaazhl was pretty much on similarly experimental lines as the director’s first movie Aruvi. Tamil music in general had a splendid 2021 with a fine mix of mainstream and offbeat music – Anirudh, Vishal Chandrashekhar, Ghibran, Santhosh Narayanan, Sean Roldan, Govind Vasantha, Thaman etc being some of the expected names on the list, while some of the surprise entries were Judah Paul (Kadaseela Biriyani), Revaa (Mughizh), Sundaramurthy KS (Navarasa) and Simon K King (Kabadadaari).

While this section usually contains more languages, this year the list is limited to Telugu and Kannada songs, as I did not actively track any of the other industries I usually do. No ranking here – just a listing of songs starting with Telugu, and movies with more than one song first in each case. Although Devi Sri Prasad’s work in Pushpa didn’t impress as per the hype, he did have a terrific year otherwise, as did Gopi Sunder, Vivek Sagar and the like. Ilaiyaraja’s only Telugu movie of the year, Gamanam, had a great song as well. In Kannada, Ajaneesh Lokanath, Charan Raj, Midhun Mukundan, Judah Sandhy and Vasuki Vaibhav were the top performers – I continue to hope that Midhun Mukundan composes in Malayalam at some point, absolutely loved his work in Garuda Gamana Vrishaba Vaahana!
