‘Tis the season to be composing sibling sentiment-based songs for Imman it would seem – last month we had Udanpirappe, in Annaatthe he gets Yennuyire in the same theme. The song sort of sits in the same zone as Anney Yaaranney from the movie even musically, but with a more grandiose arrangement. While lyricist Thaamarai modifies the lyrics in the male and female versions of the song (sung brilliantly by Sid Sriram and K S Chithra) to fit the respective perspectives, the composer too makes changes in the arrangement across the two variants. The former has Pradeep Kumar’s slide guitar as one of the highlights, and the orchestral strings that took me back to Sundari Kannaal Oru Sethi from Thalapathi at times. Chithra’s version features heavier percussion and Balasubramaniam’s naadhaswaram takes the more prominent role. While Chithra is obviously the superior singer among the two, I prefer Sid’s version for its arrangement. There’s also a naadhaswaram rendition of the song based off Sid Sriram’s version, played by K P Kumaran – clearly this composition is the centrepiece of the album. Sid Sriram gets one other song, a duet with Shreya Ghoshal title Saara Kaattrae. No points for guessing that this is one of the soundtrack’s top songs – the composer produces a beautiful sindhubhairavi raga-based melody here. This is also one of only two songs in the album to not have a profusion of folk percussions.
The title song is obviously special, being the last song where we will hear the legendary SPB provide the musical voice for Rajni onscreen (hurts more when you hear the man as vibrant as ever, even here), but musical quality-wise it would not rank very high in that incredible repertoire of the combo. I found the voiceover announcing the wedding at the start of Marudhaani (felt almost like the promo of some Tamil serial) a bit weird, but that aside, this wedding song has really grown on me over the past few days. Very catchy, albeit derivative, arrangement (love how Imman incorporates Keba Jeremiah’s guitars into the dominantly folk arrangement, especially that Latin-esque segue at the start of second verse) and Vandana Srinivasan (great to hear her after long), Nakash Aziz and Anthony Daasan are in fine form. The remaining two vocal tracks are clearly meant to accompany action scenes in the movie and will have to be watched onscreen for full effect. Vaa Saamy’s backdrop is an engaging combo of chendamelam and electric guitars for most part – very nicely done. A For Annaatthe is written and delivered by rapper Arivu (there had to be a rap track!), with Rajni’s voice making the occasional appearance. Very effective rapping from Arivu, as expected, that makes for a potent combination with the kutthu percussion. Very intriguing that the chorus here delivers what sounds like vocal percussion (dhirana.. dhira dhira na..), Imman gets Sid Sriram to do something similar in Saara Kaattrae as well (dhinthak thakina..). The album’s final two tracks are instrumental – Thalaivar Rampage Theme Music is actually two bgm pieces rolled into one, Village Kuthu Theme Music is, as guessable from the title, an extended kutthu piece.
Annaatthe. Imman strikes a fine balance between his musical sensibilities and the grandeur expected of a Rajni movie to produce an entertaining soundtrack.
