One of the highlights of the soundtrack of Udanpirappe is the playback debut that composer Imman hands two promising musicians. Riding on the back of her immense social media success over the last year and a half or so, Malayali singer-songwriter Arya Dhayal (if you are, for some reason, unaware of her, you need to check out her Instagram/Youtube channel) sounds extremely assured in her delivery of the haunting, melancholic melody that is Yenge Yen Ponmaalai. Delhi-based Pavithra Chari is the album’s other debutante, one half of the band Shadow and Light (the other half being Advaita keyboardist Anindo Bose), who last year came out with this lovely Tamil single featuring Haricharan. And she gets to sing Deivam Neethaane, a song that appears to be thematic to the movie’s sibling-love setting (Yugabharathi, the lyricist). One of my favourite songs from the soundtrack, this one – the melody is beautifully poignant (mayamalavagoula raga-based, perhaps) and there is some fine instrumentation, highlighted by Nathan’s flute solos and Kishore’s work on the sitar and sarod.
There are a few things that are generally a given when it comes to Imman soundtracks – Shreya Ghoshal getting the choicest of songs from the album, and the obvious hat-tip to Ilayaraja. Both of these hold true here as well; the latter especially applicable to pretty much every song of the movie (including the two I already discussed). Shreya’s song Anney Yaaranney (another of the “thematic” songs) comes in two versions, and I like it better in the slower Reprise version, the orchestration in the former feels a tad dated, and the slower pace and downplayed orchestration around the vocal portions in the latter allows Shreya more freedom for a nuanced delivery. Also loved the use of naadhaswaram (Balasubramaniam) here, especially with the violins in the dramatic outro. Sid Sriram is fab in Othapana Kaatteri, one of the album’s more upbeat songs that owes a large part of its appeal to the singing and arrangement. Composer gets Nithyasree Mahadevan to lead the proceedings in the festive-sounding Karambakudi Kanaga – bar her characteristically spirited singing though, the song is average.
