Paambhu Sattai – Music Review (Tamil Soundtrack)

Songs and credits at the end.

The only song he sings for Paambhu Sattai’s soundtrack, composer Ajesh Ashok does exceptionally well in Neeyum Naanum. Not that he does any less on the composing front either; the melody is beautiful and is backed by an equally pleasing guitar-led (Keba Jeremiah, Keith Peters) arrangement that goes one notch even better when the folk percussion (Krishna Kishor) hits. Ichukkattaa has a familiar sound about it, but thanks to the general liveliness and a fine vocal job by Deepak and Ranjani, will keep your feet tapping. With Vairamuthu’s words as the base, Ajesh manages to create a rousing rock-flavoured piece out of Venmegamai, aided big time by Keba’s guitaring prowess. Abhay Jodhpurkar’s voice seems processed here, and that is the only rankling factor.

Kanavugalaal Kalaindhomey sees a vocalist who isn’t heard much of late, Madhu Balakrishnan. And the way the man nails the classical-based piece (panthuvarali raga, I am guessing), one wonders why. The composer backs him up wonderfully, both vocally and with his ambient arrangement that makes particularly lovely use of Biju’s veena. Haricharan and Shreya Ghoshal get the soundtrack’s best, Nee Uravaaga. Once again the composer manages to craft a delightful melody that the singers deliver to a tee, and the orchestration is a rich melange of flute (Josy is brilliant!) and violins (Cochin Strings) and folk percussion (Vikram Rozario). Lasting just over a minute, the dark Paambhu Sattai Theme is adequately thematic, and should work well in the movie.

It’s been a year of many promising debuts in Indian film music (especially in the South). With Paambhu Sattai singer Ajesh adds himself to that list, in bold!
