Andhra Mess – Music Review (Tamil Movie Soundtrack)

Composer Prashant Pillai does a brilliant job of conveying the ambient, ethereal sort of effect in Orey Oor with his arrangement – the echoing birdsong-ish sounds, the vocals fading into the backdrop, and the like. The singing by K S Krishnan isn’t top drawer, but manages to convey the mood of the song well. An instrumental version of the song has guitars (Mat Hias, Siddharth Gautam) taking over Krishnan’s section (while retaining Prashant’s backing vocals), and this too works well though a lyrical version seems more apt for the song. Sittham too carries the composer’s stamp all over it – perhaps even a faint whiff of his own Khirama in its guitar-loaded arrangement – while the haunting tune is sung very well by Mathangi Jagdish, the guitars with that bluesy shade and the intermittent percussion lend wonderfully that feel; even that progression in tempo towards the end is a nice touch. Shiddat isn’t much different from Sittham, apart from the Hindi lyrics and the fact that Preeti Pillai, Hafiz Khan and Gagan Baderiya join Mathangi. Sittham remix starts off sounding random, but gets trippier as it goes with the composer filling the background with a lot of curious, immersive electronic sounds.

While Orey Oor and Sittham were subtle in their sounds, Aana Oona is the exact opposite, riding on a loud and boisterous arrangement, and featuring on vocals the madman from Bangalore band Live Banned, Amrit Rao. Entertaining track that suits the man’s style very well, and that he delivers with aplomb. The remaining three tracks are all thematic instrumental pieces – Two Liberated Souls, The Loot Plan and The Loot Ride – all of them dark and heavy on guitars (Mat and Siddharth again, and Rahul Chidambaran on bass). My favourite among the three is The Loot Plan that also has Rahul Chidambaran’s harmonica playing a dominant role in the backdrop (well so does the last song but I like this better), giving the song a Wild West kind of flavour.

Andhra Mess. A soundtrack that may not find much mass following but is a commendable solo debut in Tamil from Prashant Pillai all the same, one that stays true to the composer’s characteristic style.
