Thattumpurathu Achuthan – Music Review (Malayalam Soundtrack)

Songs and musician credits at the end.

Composer Deepankuran gets two of Malayalam music’s most beloved singing doyennes – Chithra and Sujatha – to share credits in the same song after a long hiatus. Vidilla Poonda Kallaa is a light-hearted ode to the young Lord Krishna, kind of like Kanna Nidurinchara (Baahubali 2), but a lot more playful in its tone. While it is a delight to listen to the singers perform in tandem, the composer does a fab job on his part too – a tune that nicely segues from Anandabhairavi to Kharaharapriya to Shankarabharanam raga, and a folk-rich arrangement that sees an assortment of percussion instruments played by Sunil. The album contains a second ode to the deity as well, Muthumani Radhe, that also happens to be my favourite from the soundtrack. Deepankuran chooses Sindhubhairavi raga as the base for the wonderfully executed bhajan-styled piece. Lovely touch, that edaykka-led (played by Krishnakumar) prelude – and excellent singing by Vijesh Gopal and chorus.

To see lyricist Anil Panachooran handle the vocals for one of his songs is a nice throwback to the first time he did so, in one of his earliest movies, which was also from director Lal Jose. Panachooran’s voice is a perfect fit for the wistful folksy piece that Mazha Varanunde is – and the man’s lines could well be an allegory to the recent floods that hit the state. Vineeth Sreenivasan and Radhika Narayanan lead the romantic Nenjinullil Aake, the album’s most filmi track, so to say. Neat job on the orchestration once again, especially the expansive use of strings (Cochin Strings). The raga is apparently Shuddh Saarang, which sounds really close to hamsanaadham – my mind went back to songs like Vidyasagar’s Poovaasam Purappadum Penne more than once! Another top song from the album is the final one, yet another devotional piece, this time to goddess Parvathi, titled Mangalakaaraka. The raga Deepankuran picks for this one is the beautiful arabhi, a raga that always has an auspicious feel about it, and the singers Manjari and Aavani do a splendid job of delivering it, aided briefly by Sudeep Kumar.

Thattumpurathu Achuthan. Composer Deepankuran’s first big-ticket project (he did get to work in 2013 with director Jayaraj – incidentally the director who launched the composing careers of his father and uncle – but Camel Safari wasn’t exactly “big-ticket”), and he delivers admirably, managing to add another good soundtrack to director Lal Jose’s long and illustrious portfolio.
