It’s just the other day that Amaal Mallik wrote a long Facebook post on how the pursuit for hit songs has been affecting the quality of Bollywood soundtracks. Half his songs for M S Dhoni – The Untold Story validate this point. There is definite likeability to the melodies of Kaun Tujhe, Phir Kabhi and Jab Tak, but it’s all too familiar. Kaun Tujhe carries the Bhatt brand of melancholy but is beautifully sung by Palak Muchhal. Jab Tak works better with the ambient, sprawling arrangement in its original form than with the redux version, both of which feature commendable vocal effort from Armaan Malik. There are elements in the orchestration that mitigate the déjà vu in Phir Kabhi—the outlandish hummings, Latino rhythms and so on—aside from the general feel good factor and Arijit Singh’s singing.
Malik sounds fabulous in the breezy Besabriyaan as well, which is the pick of the album and features some exceptional strings work (CMA Musicians, Mumbai) headlining the composer’s arrangement. Parwah Nahi has a promising line-up on vocals (Siddharth Basrur) and in the background but the song turns out unimpressive. It is only the crazy guitar solos in the interlude that sustain some interest. Padhoge Likhoge is a fun and highly engaging banter between Ananya Nanda and Adithyan A Prithviraj centred on the age old Hindi proverb. Rochak Kohli himself sings his guest composition Har Gully Mein Dhoni Hai, a motivational piece that does its job better than Parwah Nahi.
