Raman Raghav 2.0 – Music Review (Bollywood Soundtrack)

In some ways Raman Raghav 2.0 is a preview of how Udta Punjab might have sounded had Ram Sampath done it. The ingredients are pretty much the same (including words by Varun Grover), the mood is dominantly dark, but what comes out is a different kind of beast. First of those is Qatl-e-Aam where Sona Mohapatra delivers the sombre folk melody while everything around her is going bonkers – processed bols (by Yash Divecha, who also does additional arrangement for this song) and tabla bits strewn across a pulsating electronic soundscape! Shorn of all its intriguing layers, the unplugged version of the same song has Sona taking centre-stage with a guitar arrangement mildly evocative of Dil Aaj Kal Reprise due to its rhythm (Pawan Rasailly the guitarist). Nice listen, largely owing to the fine singing, but I prefer the original.

Behooda makes for a perfect intro to the movie’s protagonist, composer opting for a retro whodunit sound and nailing it. Nayantara Bhatkal (who we last heard in that lone happy track from NH10) sounds amazing, and is backed up equally well by Vivienne Pocha and Nalini Krishnan. Ram gets another fine vocalist for his rock-flavoured Paani Ka Raasta and the man sings the soulful tune brilliantly, with excellent support from Ram himself. Shon Pinto rules the backdrop with his guitars, building the song up towards a rousing finish. Raghav Theme once again picks up on the suspenseful line, and is heavy on electronic sounds. A tad too long for an instrumental theme song, but still an engaging listen for the intensity and the imaginative touches (that sarangi/esraj sample, for one).

Raman Raghav 2.0. Ram Sampath’s first with Anurag Kashyap, and he delivers in style!
