Nil Battey Sannata – Music Review (Bollywood Soundtrack)

nil battey sannata posterSongs and complete credits at the end.

Nitesh Tiwari successfully captures the woes of Mathematics haters (I was not one 😀 ) in the light-hearted Maths Mein Dabba Gul that later cleverly segues into worries of the older protagonist returning to school. Debutant composers Rohan Vinayak give the song a fitting fun treatment (Tapas Roy’s mandolin a prime factor in that fun aspect), and Rohan Utpat/Aarti Shenai do a splendid job behind the mic. There is a high chance of people confusing Murabba for an Amit Trivedi composition, the resemblance to his style (the Udaan variety) is quite strong. That said, lovely song that rides on a sweet soulful melody that is rendered to a tee by Neuman Pinto. The guitar-led arrangement (Sanjoy Das and Vinayak Salvi – even features Sanjoy’s trademark folk/classical style guitaring at one point) gains intensity as the song progresses, ending in a crescendo of sorts.

Maula too carries that Amit Trivedi flavour, though not as strongly as Murabba. Very nice feel-good piece once again, led of course by Nandini Srikar’s splendid singing (there is also a neat classical improv bit by her in the backdrop towards the end). Tapas Roy leads the orchestration here with his work on rabab and oud. It is strange that the two version of Maa are both male-rendered, though the song is clearly a daughter’s perspective. That aside, the poignant track is bound to tug at your heartstrings, as most mom tributes do. It also helps big time that the two male vocalists involved are Hariharan and Mohan Kannan, with some good support from a kids’ chorus. Shirish Malhotra’s sax, albeit sparsely used, is a beautiful touch in the arrangement. Even devoid of Shreyas Jain’s words, the tune is effective to almost the same level in the instrumental Maa Theme, few instruments convey that sentimental feeling as effectively as violins do (Jitendra Thakur the player here). Composers smartly restrict the supporting orchestration to a piano for most part. The melancholic Chanda Theme too is an instrumental composition, and this one is a duet between Jitendra Thakur on violin and Sanjoy Das on guitar, both equally proficient in their roles. The track as such comes off as more situational though, and less enjoyable as an audio track.

Nil Battey Sannata. A very promising movie debut from Rohan and Vinayak that is very much line with the premise that the movie’s trailer seems to convey.
