Amaal Mallik manages to build well on Badshah and Fazilpuria’s trippy 2014 track Kar Gayi Chull with some nice touches, most notable of which are the competent vocals from Sukriti Kakar and Neha Kakkar. Even in his supposed original track Buddhu Sa Mann though, Amaal doesn’t offer anything particularly fresh, drawing heavily from his composition last year, Sooraj Dooba Hai. The song works nevertheless, Armaan Malik in particular is fab at his singing. Like I guessed when the trailer came out, Benny Dayal-Nucleya song does indeed turn out to be a rework of their composition for Sony Project Resound, Tamil Fever. Only here the Tamil factor is diluted and the Badshah factor is brought in instead. There still is some Tamil verse, which strikes a discordant note in a piece that otherwise still remains fun thanks largely to Nucleya’s arrangement. By the way, how does Let’s Nacho work grammatically, boss?
Even the two melodic pieces, despite having done by two different composers, are plagued by the same problem in that they offer nothing new. Bolna is composed by debutant(?) Tanishk Bagchi and features a soulful yet very heard-before folky arrangement (some excellent flute). Arijit Singh and Asees Kaur handle the vocals, and really well. Saathi Rey is of the motivational kind and takes the oft-trodden path to convey the apt feel. It does manage to convey it all the same, the singing didn’t quite work for me though.
Kapoor and Sons. Engaging soundtrack that is severely lacking on freshness. Which incidentally was a case with Batra-Johar’s Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu as well.
