Bhaskar The Rascal – Music Review (Malayalam Soundtrack)

Manassilaayiram is very recognisably Deepak Dev – both in tune and arrangement – yet carries enough allure to merit multiple hearings. The composer does some smart work in the interludes; the flute-violin duet in the first interlude is one of the best points in the song. On vocals is a man not often heard in Malayalam of late, Afsal, assisted by a kids’ chorus in the right places. In I Love You Mummy it is the general sweetness of the song – accentuated big time by the presence of Devika Deepak Dev behind the mic (the processing could have been avoided) – that makes you overlook the familiarity in the tune. Simple arrangement (nice use of mandolin) to match the song’s simplicity, and Swetha Mohan partnering with Devika on the mummy role, this one too passes muster. The third song, also a melodic piece, is the soundtrack’s best. Pularoli has Vijay Yesudas doing a wonderful rendition even as Deepak provides a breezy guitar-laden background, complete with a very Bollywood-ish chorus.

Short, nice, melody-oriented soundtrack from Deepak Dev for the very interestingly titled Bhaskar the Rascal. But given that we don’t get to hear from the man that often these days, one would expect more than just “nice”.

Music Aloud Rating: 7/10

Top Recos: Just 3 songs, so not bothering with this.
