Theevram – Music Review (Malayalam Movie Soundtrack)

While the core tune of Innariyaathe displays shades of many tunes heard in the past, composer Roby Abraham more than makes up for that with a trippy guitar-led arrangement. And Vineeth Sreenivasan and Swetha Mohan take care of the rest, delivering quite commendably the lines penned by debutant lyricist Arun K Narayanan. The composer does an even more brilliant job in the orchestration of Rudhira Suryan (I thought I heard a harp in the background; not sure if it is real or synth-generated. Well included, anyway) even as Vijay Yesudas does a neat rendition (he has still to get better at the diction though) of guest lyricist Rafeeq Ahmed’s philosophical lyrics. Possibly the movie’s theme song.

Puthiyoru Paattil will pique your interest for its industrial sounds, something not heard often in Malayalam music. The song lacks the spunk to take your interest beyond that point though. Would have preferred a voice stronger and rawer than debutant Deepak Kutty singing this. Where Roby makes rock work however, is in the final song Mannaake Vinnaake where he himself gets behind the mic and does a not-so-perfect but satisfactory job. The song in any case belongs to the guitarists and drummer; some killer from them!

After Friday, Theevram is an impressive sophomore effort from Roby Abraham. Hoping that his career graph continues upward.
