Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana – Music Review (Bollywood Soundtrack)

You can listen to the soundtrack here or here (apparently the first link is not available in some countries).

There is little difficulty associating Kikli Kalerdi with the man who did the score for Dev D, there are telltale signs all over. And both the Hindi and Punjabi versions play out quite well, a large part due to Amit Trivedi and Pinky Maidasani’s quirkiness. Amit gets the Nirmohiya combo of Devendra Singh and Harshdeep Kaur to sing the respective male and female versions of Luni Hasi, a groovily arranged Punjabi track with shades of raga shivaranjani. While both the singers are absolutely fab in their singing, it is the male version that worked better for me, for its more imaginative orchestration. Motorwada is the best of the soundtrack though, with its country-based start leading onto a techno-hip hop mix unlike any techno Punjabi Haryanvi song you would have heard! Shellee’s lines are a riot! And with the song Tochi Raina gets a fresh lease on life; what he would be without Amit I cannot imagine. Not to take anything away from his singing though.

The title song is the most conventional of the lot with the composer sticking to a very conventional folk arrangement while Shahid Mallya and Harshdeep Kaur manage an expectedly soulful rendition. There is a harmonium bit in the second interlude, but it isn’t as special as the harmonium employment that the composer generally does. The instrumental theme has Tapas Roy in the lead (happy to finally see him credited as the main man for a song, he is one deserving guy) with an instrument which could be a rubab or an oud. Very soothing track, neat instrumentation. The rest two tracks are the only ones that didn’t work for me at all. Makkhan Malai sounds straight out of 90s, with a definitively standard dance template (did anyone else get reminded of My Name is Lakhan?). Labh Janjua-rendered Farukha Baadi falls to another overused dance template, this time of the Punjabi kind.

With the exception of those latter tracks, Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana once again sees Amit Trivedi exercising his imaginativeness to brilliant effect, this time within the confines of Punjabi music. Respect.
