Mere Brother Ki Dulhan – Music Review (Bollywood Movie Soundtrack)

Despite the embarrassing lyrics and the staid dance template KK and Krishna Beura’s title song makes for a decent listen. Or so I thought, till I listened to it some four times. The enjoyability diminishes drastically on multiple listens. Dhunki is relatively better; the singing by Neha Bhasin mitigates to a great extent the over-used template. It is from Choomantar that things really start working for Sohail Sen. A very catchy sound a la Tarkeebein, and neat execution on the vocals by Benny Dayal and Aditi Singh Sharma combine to give a very addictive number. The lounge-ish remix turns mildly cacophonous though.

The qawwali sound is beautifully conveyed in Isq Risk and with Sohail getting the Rahat Fateh Ali to render it the song couldn’t sound better. Although the song overall is melancholic in its arrangement there seems to be a comic undertone. With the qawwali elements replaced by the techno elements, more than half the fun is lost in the Risky Mix sung by Sreeramachandra and Neha Bhasin. Ali Zafar and Shweta Pandit’s Madhubala starts off on an interesting note but slowly the repetitiveness of the arrangement catches up and the song ends up a pretty middling affair. Might make for an interesting watch, it seems. The last song, Do Dhaari Talwar, though of similar genre, is a better effort due to smart use of instruments, I especially liked the harmonium bits. And super singing by Shahid Mallya and Shweta Pandit.

Of late Yash Raj Films is turning out a bit like the Bhatts, musically.  Soundtracks that follow a template, but still work, and Mere Brother Ki Dulhan is another one that cements this fact. Sohail Sen and Simaab Sen (I am told he did the programming for this one too) don’t display the class they did with Khele Hum Jee Jaan Se but manage to produce an entertaining score. Ironic that they will get a much bigger audience to this soundtrack than they did for Khele.. Such is Bollywood.

Music Aloud Rating: 7/10
