People who have seen the trailer of Tanu Weds Manu wouldn’t have missed Sadi Gali in the background, RDB making the perfect choice of Lehmber Hussainpuri’s Punjabi superhit from six years ago to go with the lightheartedness of the movie. With an addictive hook and Hussainpuri’s exuberant vocals, the song is instantly likeable. After that single contribution, RDB pass the baton to debutant composer Krsna, who opens with a fabulous melody characterized by an inventive semi-classical arrangement, Yun Hi. Mohit Chauhan sounds fantastic, with Ujjaini doing a good job on the backing vocals. Krsna gets behind the mike as well in the brilliantly composed qawwali called Rangrez,. The composer displays an amazing vocal prowess as he pulls off the nuanced rendition with aplomb. The best compliment I can give him is that he matches the quality of the Wadali Brothers who do an alternate version of the same song titled Hey Rangrez Mere Hey. The second version remains same in tune and arrangement barring a few tweaks, and of course the characteristic style of the vocalists.
In Piya, the composer presents another semi-classical melody, Roop Kumar Rathod singing to a complex yet very-much-appealing arrangement. It’s good to hear Roop Kumar Rathod sing classical-based tunes, always nails them. And in the final two tracks, Krsna goes massy. Mannu Bhaiyya is led by Sunidhi Chauhan with good support from Niladri Debnath, Ujjani Mukherjee, Rakhi Chand and Vivek Naik. And though a folksy booze song kind upfront, the composer’s adeptness is evident here too in the cleverly layered arrangement. There is nothing special about the closing track Jugni though, a Punjabi track that is groovy as it is supposed to be, but strictly along the standard pattern. Only Mika’s liveliness provides some reprieve in this otherwise tedious track.
Barring that last track, an impressive debut from composer Krsna for Tanu Weds Manu that sees an intelligent mix of the eclectic and the massy. I do sincerely hope that his efforts (the three classical-based tracks I mean) do not go wasted in the movie.
