Indian Time Unwrapped – Jyotsna Srikanth and the Ligeti Quartet

The eighth edition of the Songlines Encounters Festival kicks off on the 31st of May, 2018 at Kings Place, London. Representing South Indian carnatic music in the festival that features music from across the world, will be violinist Jyotsna Srikanth. The violinist’s performance, happening on the 3rd of June, will also form a part of Kings Place’s year-long Time Unwrapped series that explores how music wields time in its various forms.

The first half of Jyotsna Srikanth’s concert, with mridangam (two sided south Indian drum) and ghatam (clay pot), is a whirlwind historical sketch featuring composers from the 15th to the 20th century in several different rhythmic cycles. The second half features the London premiere of Srikanth’s Raga Seasons violin concerto with 6 movements performed with the Ligeti Quartet – depicting the six seasons of the Hindu calendar. The video below has the musician speaking about her work. You can book tickets to the event here.
