The better version of Amaal Mallik’s Main Hoon Hero Tera comes at the very end of the soundtrack. Not that it is a very special song even there, just a decent song with a very heard-before sound that is sung well by Armaan Malik and makes for a nice listen. The version that opens the soundtrack is the one that is going (undeservedly if you ask me) viral, just because it has Salman Khan on vocals. It is good they labelled it Salman Khan Version, the voice has been processed to an almost unrecognisable level. Amaal’s second song O Khuda is better in fact. The tune is fairly ordinary here too but the arrangement is more nuanced and layered. And the singing by Palak Mucchal and the composer helps.
Sachin Jigar also do two songs for Hero. The highland-ish feel and the assortment of folk instruments in the backdrop prop up the simple and fairly unremarkable tune of Khoya Khoya that is delivered finely by Mohit Chauhan with good support from Priya Panchal, Arpita Chakraborty and Tanishkaa. Jab We Met however is a brilliantly engaging mix of happy Punjabi and Caribbean musical elements (but for a curious reference to a sad flute bit from Khoya Khoya in one interlude) while the singing is nailed by Benny Dayal and Shalmali Kholgade, with Divya Kumar and Jigar Saraiya playing chorus. Composer no. 3 Jassi Katyal’s Yadaan Teriyaan is undone by its dated sound in its original version sung by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, but works marginally better in the alternate mod version that has Shipra Goyal and Dev Negi on vocals. Like their guest role in most soundtracks, Meet Bros Anjjan get to do a dance track here too, titled Dance Ke Legend which they try to spruce up with a lot of variegated sounds that just about save the song from being completely avoidable.
Hero. Multi-composer soundtrack that is bogged down big time by its ordinary and déjà vu-inducing tunes.
