Maari – Music Review (Tamil Movie Soundtrack)

Thappa Dhaan Theriyum is your standard issue kuthu song, made engaging more by Vignesh Shivan’s wacky Tanglish rhyme. The naadaswaram led arrangement has something of a Kolaveri feel to it. Dhanush takes the lead on the vocals, with Chinna Ponnu and Magizhini Manimaaran by his side, all of whom do a fine energetic job. More danciness follows with Maari Thara Local penned by Dhanush and sung by him with composer Anirudh Ravichander. Nothing particularly fresh about this one either but it is hard not to bop along to the heavy kuthu beats. The majestic sounding brass section and the accompanying title refrain would indicate a hero entry situation, for which this should work well. Bagulu Odayum Dagulu Maari starts on a frenetic strings section before going down the kuthu route, though not to the same effect as the previous ones. The strings bit turns out to be the only interesting thing about the short song sung again by Dhanush (apparently; he sounds very different here).

The soundtrack is so aligned to a dance theme that even the two apparently love-themed tracks are presented thus. If not for the credits I might not have realised that it is Vineeth Sreenivasan singing Oru Vidha Aasai – the rendition is markedly different from what I am used to hearing from him; a lot spunkier and totally owning the rock-n-roll styled rendition with scatting effects and the like! The arrangement by Anirudh too is excellent, guitars and keys ruling the proceedings. Don’u Don’u Don’u is, as the youtube description says, a “groovy love duet” and is the one most recognisable with the composer’s usual style – a haunting melody ensconced in a techno-based framework that has you hooked right from that opening refrain (the rhythm is slightly evocative of Kaadhalikkum Pennin Kaigal). The contrast between Anirudh’s rough edges and Alisha Thomas’ silken voice makes for an interesting combination behind the mic, though Dhanush’s lyrics are random. The 30 second Maari Swag piece that came with the teaser video builds on the main hook from Thara Local and again carries the hero entry vibe about it.

Maari. Out-and-out dancy soundtrack from Anirudh. And an engaging one at that.
