Raja Natwarlal – Music Review (Bollywood Soundtrack)

You can listen to the soundtrack here.

Dukki Tikki is the only instance in Raja Natwarlal’s soundtrack of composer Yuvan Shankar Raja reusing one of his Tamil tunes. Variya from Pudhuppettai gets a spiffy makeover while retaining most of its kuthu flavour, with the help of Mika Singh on vocals. The dance track that Yuvan composes newly for this movie, Namak Paare, is a rather uninteresting affair on the other hand. Mamta Sharma and Anupam Amod sing this one. Flip Your Collar is an even more avoidable combo of corny lyrics and haphazard arrangement, even Benny Dayal sounds annoying!  Benny’s other song is better, but only in comparison to the previous one. To be fair, Kabhi Ruhani Kabhi Rumani does start off very promisingly, guitars and everything. But about 45 seconds into the song the qawwali style beats kick in and an overwhelming memory of past such songs takes over (Tu Hi Haqeeqat and Tujhe Bhula Diya came instantly to mind). Has its interesting moments nevertheless, like that sarangi solo in the interlude. The composer saves the soundtrack from being a pointless debut with Tere Hoke Rahengey, a haunting melancholic melody that he orchestrates beautifully; that 30 second stretch from 2:50 where the dramatic strings section accompanies the title refrain is the best! And of course, behind the mic, is Arijit Singh. There is a reprise version too that features some very nice accordion (harmonium?) and has Shweta Pandit on vocals doing an equally fab job as Arijit. Interestingly this too has a strings-led short segment almost corresponding to the segment in the original version!

Raja Natwarlal. One song salvages Yuvan Shankar Raja’s off-colour debut Hindi soundtrack. His solo in Striker was much more awesome!

Music Aloud Rating: 6.5/10

Top Recos: Tere Hoke Rahengey, Dukki Tikki
