The collaborations with Karsh Kale and Midival Punditz seem to be rubbing off quite well on Salim Sulaiman; the title song has a very strong MPKK leaning, the techno-based fusion and all. And the composers pull that off quite well too, with some nice additions like the sitar in the second interlude. Given the genre, Aditi Singh Sharma has little difficulty doing a neat job of this one. The thing that works against the song, and quite strongly at that, is the disastrously unimaginative lyrics. Khwahishein sounds quite like a continuation from the duo’s work for Fashion. But the arrangement and Shreya Ghoshal’s fabulous rendition have enough fuel to help the song escape tedium.
Saaiyaan has a stronger reusal feel, this time the composers seemingly drawing from their own Yeh Honsla (Dor) and replacing Shafqat Amanat Ali with Rahat Fateh Ali Khan. Not a smart replacement that, considering the number of times Rahat has been used for this genre. So to cut a long story short, I would rather go back and listen to Yeh Honsla again than hear this. Halkat Jawaani is further down the order, presenting a mishmash of multiple item number templates and the singer of many of those songs, Sunidhi Chauhan, on vocals. The only other song in the soundtrack (apart from song no. 1) that offers some respite from the rehash fest is Tujhpe Fida, once again featuring some plucky use of techno sounds. With Shraddha Pandit and Benny Dayal behind the mic, the hep feel is complete.
Heroine is not without good tunes, it is just that Salim Sulaiman have used most of these tunes elsewhere in the past. Which is a letdown compared to how the duo fared with Madhur Bhandarkar last time around.
